UK 1983 Silver Proof £1 – The FIRIST round £1 coin

1983 saw the introduction of the first ever round £1 coin in the UK.

The design of the ‘new’ round £1 was decided through a competition. Designs were put forward by renowned coin engravers and judged by The Royal Mint Advisory. The winner was selected as Eric Sewell who was responsible for the beautiful Royal Arms design on the reverse by the Committee President – the Duke of Edinburgh.

In 2017, the circulated round £1 was replaced by the 12-sided coin we see in our coinage today, meaning the round £1 coin is no longer legal tender and has become quite the collector’s item.

Struck from .925 Silver to a Proof finish, the design shows the Royal Arms on the reverse.

Proof coins are struck several times using specially polished die to create a flawless finish with a perfect mirrored background and frosted design. This makes them incredibly sought after.
