Over 100 years old: The Standing Britannia Silver Florin
The Florin was first introduced under Queen Victoria and is often considered the first “decimal coin”. Following the accession of Edward VII to the throne, The Royal Mint made the intriguing decision to change the reverse design, which had remained the same for nearly 60 years.
Britannia had been prevalent on UK coinage for hundreds of years, but had never been seen on a Florin.
What’s most intriguing, is that it was unusual for a coin’s design change to be so dramatic. Changing from a cruciform shield to a completely different theme was unusual, and this design on the florin was only seen under King Edward VII’s short reign.
The Edward VII Silver Florin is now over 100 years old, making it a true historic artefact. The unique design, short period of issue, and its .925 Silver metal content have made it a popular choice amongst collectors. In fact, it’s become so popular that it’s proving harder and harder to source.
Because of this, we have a very limited number available, so you'll have to act quickly to secure one.
